An incredible Canyon for the most adventurous

TUUR Canyoning offers you a unique experience in the Rio Verde canyon. We are one of the few companies that offer the Rio Verde canyon in its Integral version including its upper section, the most technical, wildest and exciting of them all.

Turquoise and crystalline waters with the largest number of jumps and slides

Rio Verde is one of the great canyons of reference in Spain, considered one of the most beautiful open canyons of turquoise and crystalline waters of Andalusia. It is the canyon with the largest number of possible jumps among the Andalusian canyons (no jump is compulsory, there is always an optional abseil). Countless jumps of between 3 and 9 metres for those of you who are amateurs, and spectacular and mythical jumps such as the bush jump that will trigger the adrenaline of the most adventurous. It is also the canyon with the largest number of slides, up to 15 metres long in its upper section. And to complete this wide range of possibilities, there are 3 obligatory abseils of up to 12 metres under beautiful waterfalls.

Rio Verde is located in the natural park of the Sierra de Almijara, 20 km from Almuñecar and only 50 minutes drive from Malaga city.

How long will I need to complete Rio Verde x-pro?

The activity will take between 6 and 7 hours, depending on the number of participants and the physical condition of the group, including an approach path of 1h30 to 1h45 minutes. Along the approach to reach the beginning of the canyon descent we´ll see mountainous landscapes worthy of National Geographic documentaries. Before you put on your wetsuit and take a dip in the turquoise water, you can enjoy your chocolate bar or your first sandwich, and don’t forget the water! When you arrive the point of the river Known as the ‘Y’ we will have another short break to have our lunch that you will have previously stored in the watertight container that we will provide you with so that you don’t get your picnic wet.

The Best Canyons of Andalusia

Choosing the right canyon for you is no easy task. Here we are going to give you some tips on how to choose the best canyon for you. It will depend a lot on your abilities, circumstances and your tastes.

If you come on holiday and you only have one chance to choose a canyon, we advise you to make a balance between the proximity to the activity and the level you can access. Guadalmina (Marbella-Malaga) for level 1, for level 2 Rio Verde lower section (Otivar-Granada) or Garganta de Guadiaro or Zarzalones (depending on your location), Buitreras (El Colmenar de la Ftera-Malaga) for level 2.5 and Rio Verde xpro (Otivar-Granada) or Risco Blanco (Sierra Norte de Sevilla) for level 3.

Even if you have no experience, our guides will be able to guide you through these canyons without any problem and adapt to your technical abilities. It is important to adapt your physical abilities to the level of the canyon you are going to participate in.

We have two levels 4 canyons, Trevelez and Poqueira (Órgiva-Granada) for those who are already experts or have enough experience. We only do this canyon in September in optimal water flow conditions and with a higher number of guides per person.

If you are a family with children or teenagers, depending on their age we recommend Guadalmina from 6 year olds, Sima del Diablo or Zarzalones from 9 year olds or Rio Verde normal version from 9 year olds too, and if you have adventurous teenagers from 12-14 year olds you can try Las Buitreras canyon and live a great experience with them.

If you have time to do several canyons in Andalusia, For beginner level we recommend the canyon near Marbella as it is very versatile and beautiful, with long natural pools, 5 to 7 jumps up to 6 meters and a 4.5 rappel. You will have a great morning.

As a second canyon up a step in level we recommend the lower part of Rio Verde. If you have a higher physical level we recommend you to do Rio Verde x-pro where you will enjoy all the sections.

The third canyoning descent not to be missed is the canyon of Las Buitreras in a very special place, El Colmenar de la Frontera, a charming little village in the interior of western Malaga and in the heart of the huge Natural Park of Los Alcornoques.

If you are in the Seville area the two canyons not to be missed are Calzadillas (level 2) and Risco Blanco (level 3), with a higher technical commitment in the jumps and rappels. These canyons are normally done between the months of December and May, that have a granite landscape very different from the canyons we do in summer.

If you are very keen on abseiling, you can’t miss the Tajo de Ronda canyon, a short but intense canyon, with its two 35-metre rappels, one of which is flown under a waterfall right under the city’s emblematic bridge, will not leave you indifferent. The best water abseiling in Andalusia can be found here.

And if you want to enjoy many rappels, up to 14, we encourage you to visit the canyon of Lentegí (Otivar) next to the canyon of Rio Verde and one of the longest canyons in our region.

If you already have a lot of experience and have a good physical and technical level, we recommend the Trevelez and Poqueira canyons in the heart of the Alpujarra of Granada and at the foot of the Sierra Nevada National Park. These canyons must be planned in consultation with our team as they do not always have the ideal water flow to tackle them. September is usually the best or only month of the year to tackle them, although in dry years we could do them in August. It is necessary to have a minimum of 7-8 hours to be able to finish them. If the group is small and has a lot of skill it can be done in about 6 hours.

For any questions we are always at your disposal via Whatsapp or by phone, you will be attended by expert guides in canyoning, as we have accumulated many canyons throughout Europe and worked for thousands of clients with a multitude of profiles.

Our TUUR Canyoning experience in the Rio Verde was excellent and far exceeded my expectations when booking. It was run by knowledgeable and extremely capable guides who made sure everyone in the group felt safe and really enjoyed the numerous abseils, jumps and slides we undertook in the canyon. Our day out consisted of two good length and varied canyoning pitches after a fairly long walk in to the start point. At just under 10 hours in the national park this trip really is value for money and provides just the right amount of physical challenge to ensure its a day to remember.
