Guide to Safety Measures Adopted in Active Tourism Activities

TUUR ADENTURE EXPERTS

Active tourism attracts adventurers of all ages. But, like any outdoor activity, it is essential to take appropriate precautions and safety measures to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Objectives:

At TUUR Adventure, we have over 12 years of experience in active tourism and we always prioritise the safety of our clients and that they enjoy a great experience. This guide offers you a complete description of the considerations you should take into account when participating in our activities as well as the safety measures we take to ensure your safety.

If you have any further questions we are happy to answer them via WhatsApp chat or email.

General Requirements for Participation in any of our Active Tourism Activities:

To participate in our sports or active tourism activities, you must meet certain general and particular requirements of the activities:

  • Age: Participants must have the minimum or maximum age required for each of our activities and which is indicated in their description (see technical details in each of the activities on the website or in our catalogue).
  •  Physical health: You must be in good physical shape to participate in the activity. If you have any medical needs, recent surgery (…), which may affect your ability to do the activity, please consult your doctor before participating. All our activities have a description of the duration, level of physical demand and other technical details that can help you to assess your level and only embark on those that your experience and ability allow you to do.
  • Allergies: it is very important to let us know if you have any allergies and if you need medication. If this is the case, you must also tell the guide who will accompany you and provide him/her with the medication if you cannot administer it yourself.
  • Alcohol or drugs: it is forbidden to drink or be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Clothing: It is essential to wear appropriate clothing for each of the activities we propose. As well as being published in this guide, our office team will send you a reminder with details of what you should wear to participate in these activities and to ensure your safety and comfort.
  • Food and hydration: It is essential to be well nourished and hydrated before any physical exercise. We will also recommend, depending on the activity, whether or not it is necessary to bring food and water, as well as guidance on diet and quantity of water.
  • Know how to swim: You must be able to swim at least 50 metres unaided in canyons of level 2 and above. For level 1 canyoning you can ask us for a life jacket. For kayaking activities a life jacket is compulsory.
  • Not being afraid of heights: if you are afraid of heights, let us know and we will tell you which activities are exposed to heights and which are not. Via ferratas or canyoning with rappels of more than 10 metres are not recommended at all if you are afraid of heights. These technical details are in each of the descriptions of the activities advertised on the website. If you have any doubts, please contact us.
  • Disabilities: if you have a disability, tell us what disability you have and we will guide you.
  • Respect for Nature: The natural areas we visit are of special beauty and many of them are protected natural areas. We ask you to respect the environment with the following actions: do not smoke except in the areas that your guide indicates if strictly necessary, pick up the rubbish that we generate, do not shout or generate a lot of noise, walk only on paths and where the guide indicates to avoid unnecessary erosion, do not feed animals that may be found in these areas, do not cut vegetation.
  • VERY IMPORTANT – ROLE OF YOUR GROUP LEADER or RESERVATION MANAGER: The person who makes the reservation and receives all the information must inform all the participants of the group about the details of the activity, the physical and technical level, minimum and maximum age, food and hydration, clothing, duration, particular conditions (…).

Specific security measures implemented by TUUR ADVENTURE EXPERTS for sport or active tourism activities.

At TUUR we take all the necessary measures to guarantee maximum safety during our adventure activities. Here is a list of some of the safety measures we implement:

  • Our staff have the qualifications required by law for each sport or active tourism discipline and are familiar with the established safety measures.
  • All the guides have means of communication. In case of need, they will contact the office that has an action protocol or directly call 112.
  • All guides are certified annually to ensure that they have the physical conditions to carry out their work.
  • Every year TUUR offers the guides technical refresher courses in mid-mountain rescue and canyoning, so we try to be well trained for each new season.
  • The staff has knowledge and practice in rescue and first aid and has a first aid kit during the development of the activities.
  • Before each of the activities, we ask you for some information such as your age, weight and height in order to prepare the technical material that you will need (if it is the case for a technical activity such as canyoning or via ferrata), and on the other hand for us to be able to make a prevention and assess whether the combination of age, weight and height could be a reason for a low level of fitness.
  • At the beginning of each activity the guide will give you the details of the activity, duration, physical and technical level.
  • All participants receive prior instructions on the safety measures to be adopted during the activity.
  • The equipment used meets all the established safety measures, is approved by the E.C. and is renewed periodically.
  • Our services include assistance insurance and the company has the corresponding Civil Liability insurance, in accordance with current regulations.
  • We wash and sterilise the equipment after each use.
  • Any decision taken by the guide during the activity in relation to your safety must be respected by the client, otherwise the guide may cancel the activity, without refund.
  • We carry out a weather check to prevent alerts and eliminate activities that do not comply with safety conditions under unstable weather conditions.
  • For safety reasons we reserve the right to modify the programme of activities totally or partially due to weather conditions, and the user will be entitled to a refund in case of cancellation.

CANYONING OR CANYONING ACTIVITY

During the descent, follow these guidelines to ensure your safety and that of others:

  • You must follow the instructions of the experienced guide at all times.
  • Respecting all safety rules is essential for a safe experience.
  • Always keep your helmet on and fastened. You may not remove it at any time during the tour.
  • You will not be able to do the activity if: you have cardiopulmonary deficiency or problems, are pregnant, or have other health problems that make you unable to do the activity safely.
  • If you are afraid of heights, none of the canyons offered are suitable for you except the Guadalmina canyon, located in Benahavis or Guadiaro Gorge, located in El Colmenar de la Frontera. All the rest of the canyon have mandatories rappels.
  • The minimum and maximum ages are indicated in the description of each activity.
  • You should know that no jumping is compulsory, but if there is a rappel during the chosen canyon it is compulsory (except in the case of Guadalmina, which can be climbed with a rope).
  • In all water canyons, both in summer and winter, and as an important safety measure, we provide you with a wetsuit adjusted to your height and weight. This not only has the function of maintaining body heat, but more importantly it gives you greater buoyancy which may be necessary in case you need help and cushions possible impacts that you may suffer from slips or falls.
  • In the canyons where it is necessary to eat during the activity, you will be provided with a backpack with a watertight container in which you will place your food. The water will be put directly into the backpack.
  • The guide has the collective equipment in his backpack which consists of: ropes, rescue material and equipment, first aid kit, means of communication, and everything necessary to maintain the safety of the group.
  • For the canyoning activity it is necessary and very important to bring the following material:
    • Closed Sports Shoes with Sticky Soles: this is important as the slipperiness of a water environment is greater. If you do not have suitable footwear or do not want to use your own, we can provide you with professional canyoning footwear at an additional cost.
    • Clothes: swimming costume already in place, spare clothes.
    • Sun cream: in sunny weather.
    • Medication: in case you need it
    • Glasses: you can wear glasses with a lens or replace them with contact lenses.
    • Food: you will be told a few days before the canyoning what food and water you should take with you depending on the chosen descent.
